Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week, they post a topic and encourage fellow bloggers to list their own top ten answers. This week’s prompt is to list your Top Ten Favorite Book Covers! I chose to be very general and include any cover I like, instead of limiting it by genre, author, etc. These were the first covers to come to my mind, and the trends are interesting–it looks like I most enjoy very ornate and elaborate covers or the complete opposite, very bare and clean covers. Hmm!
1. The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien and illustrated by Alan Lee
One of my best friends had this edition of The Hobbit, which we (being kids) nicknamed The Golden Hobbit. The cover has beautiful, shiny gold filigree treasures surrounding the dragon Smaug.
2. 1984, by George Orwell
That stark white background with a large-pupiled blue eye is so simple and yet, so indicative.
3. The Rough-Face Girl, by Rafe Martin
Funny that this and The Hobbit were both books from my youth–I wonder if covers make a deeper impact on you as a child? Anyway, this is a wonderful Algonquin tale that I read many times as a youngster, and I could draw this cover from memory.
4. 100 Years of Solitude, by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
While this isn’t the cover I have, I love it for the riot of color and texture. Great book and beautiful imagery.
5. The Bone People, by Keri Hulme
I felt that this cover nicely represented the Aboriginal and family themes that are so present in the book. I wish you could see the level of detail represented in those hands!
6. Wild Magic, by Tamora Pierce
This is another one that is indelibly impressed in my mind. I was also horse-obsessed as a kid, so it makes sense that this cover would have endeared itself to me!
7. The Darkangel, by Meredith Ann Pierce
Boy, was I obsessed with this series when I was in high school! And my attention was first caught by the classical painting look of the cover. (It also doesn’t hurt that I have a slight obsession with silver-haired men.) It would be great to see this trilogy become popular again in the wake of Twilight, especially since it was published first (1982)!
8. Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs, by Chuck Klosterman
Wry, witty, and in-your-face–I can’t think of a better introduction to a Klosterman book.
9. Columbine, by Dave Cullen
One of my favorite nonfiction books ever, with a sparse cover that nevertheless has huge cultural and emotional impact.
10. The Magician King, by Lev Grossman
I just like trees!

1984 and that version of the Grossman’s book are great- in fact I love your entire list. Don’t even get me started on how much I liked Wild Magic as a kid 🙂
I’m kinda creeped out by the 1984 cover…I think it’s the starkness of it that’s unnerving!
